Chapter Three

One minute Zac was there, and the next he was gone. George wasn’t sure if this was a ploy or if something had actually happened to Zac.

He picked his way through the grass toward the place Zac had been, but it was impossible to see anything in the dim light, let alone in the overgrowth. A low groan sounded from about where Zac had disappeared.

“Do you think something got him?” Jesse took a step closer.

“Do you really believe in this rubbish?” George knew Jesse did, but it was amusing to poke fun at him.

“No…Yes… He could have fallen into a grave or something.” Jesse stumbled over the uneven ground.

George followed, half wondering what Zac had up his sleeve. He tested the ground with his cane as he walked, not planning on falling into a grave himself.

Zac popped up and hissed, “Boo.”

Jesse stumbled back. When he caught himself, he growled. “Fucker! I thought you’d died.” He took a few heaving breaths and hunched forward, resting his forearms on his knees.

George had expected something similar, so the gesture didn’t surprise him.

“I tripped over a damn gravestone.” As they approached they saw Zac sitting on a massive stone lying on its side. He brushed it off and cocked his head to read. “Ripper.” His face took on a far off look, and he groaned while gripping himself. “I used to know a Ripper.”

Jesse looked horrified and backed away. “Only you would get an erection over a gravestone.”

Zac shrugged unapologetically. “Now that you’ve had your birthday fright, we should get back to the group.” He brushed himself off and looked around. “Where did the group go?”

George turned in a slow circle. “It seems as if we’ve been left behind. We better get a move on.”

Jesse didn’t budge.

“Jesse?” George asked.

“You told him.” Jesse’s face was filled with rage. He’d finally put it all together.

“I bribed him.” George had used the means at his fingertips to meet his end.

“He did.” Zac looked so fucking smug.

Jesse glanced around. Things were too quiet. “With what?”

“I had to agree to let him come.”

Jesse made an angry animal noise. George would have laughed had he not known how mad Jesse really was.

“So not only does my Halloween tour get crashed, and I don’t get to see any ghosts, but also my birthday, which I wanted to keep from all of you, is destroyed.” He crossed his arms over his chest.

Maybe Jesse hadn’t put it all together. “Now little one, did you think I would tolerate not knowing when your birthday was?” George covered. “Plus, we still have the hotel.”

Jesse scowled. There was something he was still holding back, and George hadn’t quite put his finger on it. He knew there was a reason Jesse insisted on the hotel, but he couldn’t figure out what it was. George saw no point in replying, so instead he waited. The full moon was making its appearance, and it would only be a matter of moments before things got under way.

“You have nothing to say—” Jesse stopped as a howling noise reached their ears.
